Chronic inflammation can impact the body’s ability to use iron to make enough red blood cells. Therefore, iron deficiency can occur in chronic conditions like chronic kidney disease, heart failure, inflammatory bowel disease and certain inflammatory conditions. Because of this complex aetiology of iron deficiency in these patients, management of it may present some challenges.
